When I was growing up, I was taught to play fair. Fair play isn’t just a core tenet of democracy; it’s central to what we believe as Catholics. Our faith calls us to establish a just and fair economy where everyone’s needs are met. Despite our rich democratic tradition, many people are still struggling to make ends meet. Many can’t even get in the game.

“Denying someone abortion care, or any healthcare, simply because they cannot afford the procedure is an assault on their God-given dignity.”

A level playing field is important when it comes to healthcare—and abortion should be part of healthcare. Denying someone abortion care, or any healthcare, simply because they cannot afford the procedure is an assault on their God-given dignity.

Although many Catholics like me across the United States believe in a comprehensive and just healthcare system where all have access to life-saving procedures, the Catholic hierarchy’s lobby in Washington, DC, does not play fair. The bishops have repeatedly fought against public funding for abortion and used abortion as a wedge to block desperately needed healthcare reform.

But Catholics like me understand that abortion has to be both legal and accessible. Without public funding, poor people have no access and the legality of abortion is only a symbol.

I have hope for a future in which we have a level playing field. I have hope for a nation where gender, class and race are not burdens to accessing healthcare. I have hope for a church that treasures collaborative models of leadership, not a top-down hierarchical approach. I have hope for a government that serves the needs of all people, not just the wealthy and their lobbyists. I have hope for a society where everyday Catholics—not just bishops—have a voice.

I have hope for a world where abortion is accessible to all who need it. This hope cannot be a reality as long as bishops, lobbyists and legislators work to block public funding for abortion. But it can be a reality when Catholics and all people of faith and goodwill support equal abortion access.

Get in the game. Support equal access to abortion.
